Air Malta

Air Malta was set up in 1973, and now operates to around 45 destinations in Europe and North Africa with a fleet of 13 aircraft. In 2002 Air Malta carried 1.63 million on its scheduled and charter services, achieving a market share of 56%. Air Malta's primary aim is to establish, maintain, develop and operate air transport services to and from Malta which, by the carriage of passengers and cargo, serve the National interest. While providing a significant contribution to the Maltese economy Air Malta has generated and reinvested its internal financial resources to promote the local tourism industry abroad.

DMCD (Destination Management Companies Directorate) 
 
The Destination Management Companies Directorate, is a branch within the Incoming Tourism Directorate of FATTA The DMCD represents local companies whose main line of activity is to provide professional tailor made programmes together with the complete destination management for all types of seminars, conferences, conventions and incentives.  The main aim of the DMCD is that of maintaining and upgrading primary and ancillary services provided to clients staying Malta and improving support services for overseas principals thus giving the right impetus to develop Malta further as a prime CIT destination. Among its  aims and objectives, the DMCD counts: liasing with third parties to develop and establish new markets, ensuring local standards comply with internationally accepted norms, and promoting the interests of CIT tourism. The DMCD works closely with the Malta Tourism Authority's Conference and Incentive Travel Division as well as arious stakeholders.

FATTA (Federation of Associations of Travel & Tourism Agents)

FATTA (Federated Association of Travel & Tourism Agents)
Formerly known as the ATA (Association of Travel Agents), FATTA evolved, into a Federation in March 1996. In January 2005 FATTA underwent a restructuring process and incorporated the former two Associations namely, MATA (Malta Association of Travel Agents) and MAITA (Malta Association of Incoming Tourism Agents )  changing its name to Federated Association of Travel & Tourism Agents – Malta.  Two main Directorates have been set up namely The Incoming Tourism Directorate and the Outgoing Travel Agents and Tour Operators Directorate. FATTA works within various aspects of the local tourism industry together with the Malta Tourism Authority through the specially appointed representative on the MTA's Main Board and various Directorates or committees. It strives to promote and maintain professionalism and high level of standards among the local travel and tourism service providers and to be a leading force in the travel and tourism trade. FATTA is also a full member in ECTAA, the European counterpart and UFTAA.

FELTOM (Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations Malta)

FELTOM, is a self-regulating association, which is officially recognised by both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Tourism. In addition, FELTOM also holds consultative status with the Malta Tourism Authority. FELTOM boasts the membership of the major EFL schools in Malta.  The Federation was established in December 1989, with the aim of enhancing the quality of the local EFL industry. In order to achieve its aim, FELTOM has provided its member schools with a Code of Academic Conduct.

(GTA) Gozo Tourism Association 

The Gozo Tourism Association was set up during a general meeting held for tourism operators in Gozo on the 11th February 1999.  The main objectives of the Gozo Tourism Association are; to unite operators in the tourism industry in Gozo, promote Gozo as an all year round distinct tourist destination, secure the co-operation of Association members and to protect as well as to promote the interest of the members of the Association.  The Association incorporates all sectors in the tourism industry, and is governed by a Council which is elected during the Annual General Meeting.  The business of the Association is conducted by the Executive Council while the running of the GTA's office is administered by a chief executive officer.  Since its inception, the Gozo Tourism Association has undertaken various initiatives including the publications of a guide book entitled 'Gozo -  The Island of Myth and Miracles', in both English and Italian, as well as the commissiong of a the Gozo Tourism Review and Framework prepared by Stevens and Associates.  For the past two years GTA has taken part in discussions concerning Malta's accession to the EU.  The Association also took part in compiling the Report on Special Needs Assessment and talks about Gozo being declared as a region.  Association representatives also form part of the Gozo Regional Projects Committee.

Institute of Hospitality Malta (formerly HCIMA Malta)

The Institute of Hospitality started in the United Kingdom but now is established in over 100 countries with a worldwide membership of around 15,000. Membership is made up of Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism Management Professionals. Until today it remains the only Professional Management Body in the industry Worldwide.  Membership is divided into Fellows, Members and Associates; these are recognised by the letters FIH, MIH and AIH. The Institute of Hospitality Malta was formed in Malta as a Chapter in March 1984. In 2004 the Group changed its status to become Institute of Hospitality Malta - a Non-Profit Making Organisation.. Local membership is varied and includes some of the top managers in the industry as well as junior management employees plus many students studying to start a career in the industry.   The scope of the Institute is to improve the qualifications of personnel working in these industries through educational activities by organising Conferences, Seminars and Industry-visits besides other Social events. The Institute of Hospitality Malta has been publishing a quarterly Hospitality & Leisure journal for some 10 years and now is revamping this with a fresher publication called the HOSPITALITY MANAGER.

MHRA (Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association)

The MHRA was formed in 1958 to unite, council and represent owners, managers and operators of hotels and restaurants.  The Association sought to highlight the benefits of a successful tourism industry, while protecting its members and providing an infant industry with purpose and strategy.  With Malta’s Independence in 1964, the tourism industry started to grow and the MHRA pressed for improvements.  The Association encouraged its members to build and maintain high standards, while working towards government investment in infrastructure.  As the major Association in the tourism sector, and an important employers’ union, the MHRA is presents on several national policy making bodies, including the MTA and all its directorates, the ITS and the MCESD.  The MHRA also maintains close contact with government departments and ministries.  The Association’s 45 year track record places it among the major constituted bodies in Malta.

MIA (Malta International Airport)

Malta International Airport plc was registered on 16th May 1991.  It commenced operations on 1st January 1992 initially managing and operating only the air terminal and later the entire Airport which also includes the airfield services. In July 2002, MIA was privatised with the government selling 40% of its shares to the Malta Mediterranean Link Consortium Ltd, MIA’s strategic partners consisting of Vienna International Airport, Canadian-based SNC Lavalin and the Maltese holding Airport Investments Ltd.  In October 2002, the government sold a further 20% of its stake in MIA through an IPO offering and in December 2002 the company was listed on the Malta Stock Exchange.  Tourism remains the single most important factor that impacts on the passenger throughput at the Airport. However, other non-aviation activities at the air terminal, such as retailing, are also an important source of revenue for the company. The company has identified new areas of business so far untapped and have the potential to develop with the expert assistance of its strategic partners.  These include the ‘Cruise and Fly’ concept, hubbing, cargo, aircraft maintenance and lease of office buildings and land at MIA. The airport is a member of ACI-EUROPE (Airport Council International - Europe).  In June 2003, MIA was awarded ‘Best Runner-up Airport in the World’ and ‘Best Runner Up Airport in Europe’ by the prestigious ‘Airport World’ magazine, the official publication of ACI.  The award was based on the IATA Global Monitor Award 2002, an important survey among 51 airports and based on the overall perception of 70,000 passengers worldwide.

Malta Union of Tourist Guides (MUTG)
  
The MUTG was founded in 1980. The role of the Union is to promote tourist guides, to regulate the relations between members and employers and to safeguard the interests of its members. The MUTG is a member of the Federation of European Guides (FEG). In collaboration with FEG the MUTG is constantly working towards creating and maintaining high standards in the qualification and training of tourist guides. The MUTG's newly launched website promotes local guides all over the world, it also gives visitors useful information regarding guided tours on the Maltese Islands.  Tourist guides are instrumental in promoting Maltese culture and heritage. In pursuing this, the MUTG is highly involved in the innovation of new tours exploring different aspects of local Culture. The role of the tourist guide encapsulates the very essence of the hospitality a host country offers. The MUTG is proud to represent approximately three hundred tourist guides who are constantly work towards offering a positive Malta Experience.

PDSA (Professional Diving Schools Association)

The Professional Diving Schools Association was formed by a group of dive centre operators in 1982. Since then, the majority of dive centres around Malta and Gozo have become members of the PDSA. Since its inception, the objectives of the association have been: The promotion of scuba diving in the Maltese Islands and the attainment of the highest standards in safe, recreational, diving practise. The association also continually monitors of all issues related to the marine environment and well as fosters the continuing development of diving education within the diving industry.  The Association is the only one that specifically represents the diving industry and is recognised as such by the Maltese government and other entities. The Association is very actively involved with the MTA, as well as other Government departments, and enjoys a healthy dialogue on issues relating to the needs of divers visiting our shores.   An important function of the PDSA is to keep key government departments, fully informed, of the latest developments in the fast changing sphere of recreational diving.   Membership is open to all licensed, dive centre operators, who are prepared to commit to the high standards of safety and professionalism, demanded by the association and expected by the international diving market.

VISET (Valletta International Sea Terminal)

VISET commenced operations in December 2001, and is now responsible for managing and upgrading existing ferry terminal facilities.  VISET has been entrusted by Government to undertake a development programme, worth about 24 million Euros, to convert and restore a series of 18th century warehouses that front the waterside into an ambitious waterfront development including state of the art passenger facilities.  Works on the new terminal have already commenced and all major works are on schedule for completion by 2005.  Upon its termination, the project will provide a totally new kind of unforgettable welcome to the Valletta Waterfront.
The project will mark a major regeneration of the harbour area and bring Valletta right down to the waterfront with a style befitting a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen.  The project is aimed at making the most of Valletta’s extensive natural port, the Grand Harbour - the epicentre of Malta’s maritime activity, which has seen an upsurge in cruise traffic over the past few years.
